This strong federal law was designed to protect you, the consumer, from deceptive and abusive debt collection practices.  This law regulates what procedures creditors and debt collectors must use when attempting to collect on debts.  Knowing what collectors are NOT allowed to do can save you from potential harassment.

How can a Debt Collector Violate this Law?

There are many different ways a creditor or debt collector can violate this Act.  Some of these violations include, but are not limited to:

  • Making false statements
  • Making threatening claims
  • Calling at your work place (after you’ve notified them not to)
  • Calling you repeatedly
  • Calling at inappropriate times of the day
  • And many other ways
